After three years from the disappearance from the market, Smart would seem to bounce back with a vehicle that is suitable for more than two passengers.
So Mercedes-Benz line dedicated to city cars is expanding and it’s developing a new Smart with three places. According to rumors it will be called "Forthree”. We may think that Mercedes-Benz hurry up the preparations of the new Smart in response to the competition represented by the Toyota IQ, and urban cars from Audi and BMW.
Roomers are that the new chair position of the new Smart will be borrowed from Formula 1 McLaren’s. The machine is designed with the driver's seat located centrally in front and two passenger seats positioned in the back and across the cabin, as in V formation - an arrangement made possible due to positioning engine in the rear. The appearance itself is not new.
The little car with three places has been conceived as a sport alternative to the second generation of Smart “Fortwo”, with the possibility of carrying three persons, but with limited trunk space.
Among other things, smart “Forthree” will be equipped with folding chairs, and a cross rail which award folding driver's seat.
There has been no announcement on the motor package, but it is well known that Mercedes-Benz has already launched a new line of modular engines in three cylinder gasoline and diesel, 1.4 liter. Also, in developing is a new gearbox with seven gears.
According to inside sources the car will arrive in showroom in 2014.
1. Nice idea. Now, if they would
Nice idea. Now, if they would only solve the Cruise Control Issue and come up with a spare wheel. Yes, it can just be a wheel with no tire, and it can be in two segments that you slide together with a dovetail groove. It can have rubber vulcanized to it for traction and store under the seat or in the tailgate storage bin. Limit it to 25 mph, just enough to get you to a place that can supply a new tire in case of a blow-out.
I have over 18k miles on mine.
