The wait is over. Now the new Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition is unveiled, taking the "Le Mans" winning supercar to new heights in the form of a contemporary version.
As a tribute to the original Ford GT supercar, the prototype that paved the way for Ford's first supercar more than fifty years ago, Ford is now introducing its 2022 Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition. The car is inspired by the prototype from 1964, which debuted at the New York International Auto Show in 1964 and later became America's first "Le Mans" winning supercar.
This is the first Ford GT Heritage Edition that not only celebrates previous race victories, but with the car, we go a sod deeper and pay tribute to the early start of Ford's legacy with supercars. The Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition is a modern interpretation of the original, where there is absolutely no doubt about which car we pay tribute to, says Mike Severson, Ford GT's program manager.
The new Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition will be unveiled at Monterey Car Week, where it will be joined by the only remaining 1964 Ford GT prototype.
In honour of the five original GT prototypes
As can be seen from the photos, the new Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition is design-wise inspired by the same look as the prototype from 1964. The colours and speed stripe on the roof are repeated on the new Heritage Edition, while the car as something new is complemented by selected red details.
Carbon fibre details also adorn the car - among other things in the form of the 20-inch alloy wheels with Brembo brake callipers and inside the cabin with door frames and seats made of carbon fibre. In addition, the sports seats are upholstered in blue Alcantara suede, while the instrument panel is also upholstered in leather.
Back in 1963, Ford began developing its own supercar to beat Ferrari and win the "Le Mans" race. The first Ford GT prototype (GT / 101 chassis) was unveiled less than a year later at the New York International Auto Show.
In total, five Ford GT prototypes were built. Each prototype was adjusted and developed to achieve the best possible performance and speed ultimately. These prototypes are some of Ford'sFord's most significant cars produced in connection with the founding of Ford'sFord's GT program, which culminated in the victory at Le Mans in 1966. Today, the vehicles symbolize a groundbreaking technique leading to today's 2022 Ford GT Heritage Edition.
There are many milestones in the history of the Ford GT. The team behind the prototypes has for each prototype believed that that particular model was the right one at the given time. The 1964 prototype marks a time when creativity was unleashed on the team behind, which was the starting shot for Ford's GT program, says Mike Severson.
Of the five Ford GT prototypes built, the GT / 105 chassis is the only surviving model.
