GMC is bringing back the legendary Hummer as an electric car. Its name is GMC Hummer EV. GM promises around 1,000 hp and almost 16,000 Nn of torque! The first copy has now rolled off the line, and it has already been sold for 1 million euros. From now on, Hummer no longer exists as a separate brand but under the umbrella of General Motors subsidiary GMC.
Everything about this 5.51 meter long and 2.20 meter wide (wheelbase 3.45 meter) pickup exudes robustness: be it the bumpers with massive tow hooks, the panels for the wheel arches, or the XXL exterior mirrors.
Power
Under the hood, the new GMC Hummer EV holds three engines producing over 1000 hp and 1600 Nm, figures that allow the car to reach 100 km / h in just 3 seconds in the "Watts to Freedom" driving mode, and its real range is 563 km with a single charge.
The new GMC Hummer EV electric SUV is based on GM's new Ultium Drive electric platform, previously known as BEV3. The battery architecture, deeply integrated into the chassis, is also known as the Ultium. The battery cells are developed and produced in cooperation with LG Chem and should contain a lot of nickel but little cobalt. The battery offers a scalable capacity of 50 to 200 kWh. It is not yet known precisely how many kWh the GMC Hummer EV achieves. But the battery modules work on an 800-volt basis and can be charged with 350 kW. It should be able to recharge almost 160 range kilometers in ten minutes.
Off-road features
The underbody cameras, which allow up to 18 different views, and the numerous telemetry data (for example, torque output, differential lock activation, tire pressure, pitch and roll angles, drift meters) help the driver, especially off paved roads. All wheels are individually suspended and directly coupled to the motors. At the front, there is an electronic differential lock that can transfer up to 100 percent of the drive power to the front wheels. At the rear, a limited-slip differential is simulated using torque vectoring.
Ball joint half-shafts maximize the entanglement ability of the new Hummer EV. The Hummer also has all-wheel steering and crab mode for optimal terrain characteristics. Here the driver can set the front and rear wheels diagonally at the push of a button to move the vehicle almost sideways.
Price
The new GMC Hummer EV electric pickup will be the first model that GM will manufacture in the new Factory Zero in Detroit Hamtramck (GM's first dedicated electric car plant). The base price starts at 71,000 euros, but for a GMC Hummer EV with a large battery, you have to pay over 98,000 euros.
The new GMC Hummer EV is GM's first step in developing electric cars, and in 2022 models such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV and a possible Cadillac Escalade EV will go into production. The Hummer EV electric pickup will compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian, and the Tesla Cybertruck.
