Top 8 best-selling electric cars of 2021

After over a decade of hype, there are some indications that the electric car revolution is now among us. In 2021, the United States had over 21 electric cars on the market and many hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Almost every notion that adorns a showroom floor has an element of electricity. Automobile manufacturers have committed to launching dozens of electric vehicles during the next decade. Governors have pledged to prohibit the sale of gasoline-powered automobiles. And with advancements in charging infrastructure and battery technology, the vision of an electric future has never been more evident.

However, one remains: for electric cars to truly transform the world, electric cars must be driven. To keep tabs on advancement toward that ideal, we compiled a list of the eight best-selling electric vehicles for 2021. Unfortunately, not all automakers provide sales figures for their electric cars, particularly when they share a brand with gas or hybrid cars.

One # Tesla Model Y

Tesla's Model Y debuted in the summer of 2020 and soon surpassed demand for all of Tesla's prior vehicles. Indeed, more Model Ys were purchased in 2021 than all other non-Tesla EVs combined (this does not count EVs sold by firms that do not disclose their sales figures, such as Kia and Polestar). The Tesla Model Y is a bloated Model 3 that drives and looks like one. It is available with a third row of two seats, but be aware that the seats are tight and the cargo capacity is reduced. The great news is that the Tesla Model Y Long Range has an estimated range of 326 miles, while the entry-level model has a range of 244 miles.

Although the Model 3 has been on the market for over four years, it continues to be remarkable for its combination of class-leading range and a very low price. The Model 3's simple design and big touchscreen control center established new standards for the rest of the electric vehicle market, and buyers have flocked to the vehicle. However, the Model 3's huge popularity has dwindled somewhat over the previous year. In 2021, the Model 3 outsold itself by almost 14,000 units from 2020. A strong performance, but anything larger, usually sell better in today's market.

Three # Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Mach-E is not Ford's first electric vehicle, but it is the first Ford EV to attract an enthusiastic fanbase and appear on any bestseller list. The Mach-E is available in various configurations, including rear- or all-wheel drive and a range of up to 305 miles. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is styled like the old Mustang and drives with the assurance that it was engineered by people who care. In addition, the Mustang Mach-E GT, a sportier variant, is on the way. The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT will have 480 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds.

Four # Chevrolet Bolt EV

Chevrolet has revamped the Bolt and just added a new family member in the shape of the Bolt EUV, a crossover. The Chevrolet Bolt electric car has 200 hp and a range of around 259 miles. In addition, DC rapid charging is an optional feature that enables the Bolt to add 100 miles of range every 30 minutes at Level 3 charging stations.

Five # Volkswagen ID 4

Although the ID.4 is not Volkswagen's first EV for the US market, it is prepared to affect its predecessors significantly. Volkswagen's electric crossover surpassed some more established competitors on our list, selling over 6000 units in Q3 last year alone. Volkswagen estimates that the ID.4's range will be up to 260 miles in its launch model, featuring rear-wheel drive and 201 horsepower. Eventually, the crossover will be offered with all-wheel drive and a maximum output of 302 horsepower.

Six # Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf electric car is not one of the most desired electric vehicles on the market, at least on paper. It is priced similarly to a Chevrolet Bolt but has an estimated driving range of just 149 miles with the basic battery pack, compared to the Bolt's expected range of 259 miles. The Leaf is not as appealing as many of the other electric cars on our list, and its interior arrangement is purposely strange. However, the Nissan Leaf is something of an institution in this list of best-selling electric cars. When it debuted in the United States as a 2011 model, just a handful of electric cars were available. It has progressed since then, but not as quickly as its competitors.

Seven # Audi e-tron

In 2021, Audi's e-tron electric crossover and its flashy-looking twin, the Audi e-tron Sportback, sold 10,921 units. The Audi e-tron electric vehicle encapsulates Audi elegance with a two-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 355 horsepower (and, in short bursts, up to 402 horsepower). The Audi e-tron can go around 222 miles; the e-tron Sportback can travel approximately 218 miles. While the price is exorbitant, unlike many electric car interiors, the Audi e-tron has leather and genuine wood.

Eight # Porsche Taycan

Porsche produces some of our favorite automobiles; therefore, it is unsurprising that it also makes a fantastic electric car. However, we were happy. Additionally, we are glad that others appear to be enthusiastic about Porsche's first electric vehicle.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S accelerates to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. All Taycans come equipped with an 800-volt charging infrastructure that should allow them to absorb electrons faster than any other best-selling electric car on the road. Be prepared before you begin window shopping for a Porsche Taycan electric car: the top-of-the-line trim levels are close to $200,000.
