The New Dacia Spring: A Cheap and Cheerful Electric Car for the Masses

The New Dacia Spring: A Cheap and Cheerful Electric Car for the Masses

The Dacia Spring is not your typical electric car. It does not have a sleek design, a futuristic interior, or a long range. It does not offer high performance, advanced technology, or luxury features. It does not even have a catchy name.

But what it does have is a very low price tag. The Spring is the most affordable electric car in Europe, starting from just $14,900. That is less than half the price of some of its competitors, such as the Renault Zoe, the Peugeot e-208, or the Volkswagen ID.3.

2024 Dacia Spring

The Spring is the first electric car from Dacia, a Romanian brand owned by Renault that specializes in budget-friendly vehicles. Dacia is known for its simple, practical, and reliable cars, such as the Sandero, the Logan, and the Duster. The Spring follows the same philosophy, but with a zero-emission twist.

The Dacia Spring electric car is based on the Renault City K-ZE, an electric car sold in China since 2019. It has a small 26.8 kWh battery that provides a range of 140 miles on the WLTP cycle. It has a modest 65 hp motor that delivers a top speed of 78 mph and a 0-62 mph time of 19.1 seconds. It has a basic equipment level, with manual windows, air conditioning, and a 7-inch touchscreen as standard.

The Spring is not meant to impress anyone with its specs or features. It is meant to appeal to people who want a simple, affordable, and efficient way to get around town. It is ideal for urban and suburban drivers who do not need a lot of space, power, or range. It is also suitable for car-sharing services, fleet operators, and delivery companies who want to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs.

2024 Dacia Spring

The Spring has been a success story for Dacia since its launch in 2021. It was the third most sold electric car to retail customers in Europe in 2022 and 2023. It received a 5-star rating from the Green NCAP, an independent organization that evaluates the environmental impact of vehicles. It also won several awards, such as the Car of the Year in Romania, the Best Electric Car in Spain, and the Best Value Car in the UK.

But Dacia is not resting on its laurels. The brand has recently introduced the new Dacia Spring, a refreshed version of its electric car that aims to make it even more attractive, convenient, digital, and versatile. The new Spring has a completely redesigned exterior and interior, a more powerful motor, a customizable digital dashboard, and a 10-inch multimedia central screen. It also retains its excellent fuel economy, low maintenance costs, and a generous warranty.

The new Spring is available in three trim levels: Essential, Comfort, and Prestige. The Essential version is the most basic, with 14-inch steel wheels, black bumpers, and cloth seats. The Comfort version adds 15-inch alloy wheels, body-colored bumpers, roof rails, and a rearview camera. The Prestige version is the most upscale, with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, chrome accents, and leather seats.

The new Spring also offers some optional extras, such as a sunroof, a wireless smartphone charger, a heated steering wheel, and a blind spot warning system. The new Spring can also be equipped with a heat pump, a device that improves the efficiency of the heating and cooling system and increases the range by up to 10% in cold weather.

The new Spring is not the only electric car in Dacia’s lineup. The brand also offers the Dacia Spring Cargo, a commercial version of the Spring that replaces the rear seats with a flat load floor and a partition wall. The Dacia Spring Cargo has a cargo volume of 23.3 cubic feet and a payload of 770 lbs, making it ideal for small businesses and delivery services.

2024 Dacia Spring

The new Spring faces some competition from other low-cost electric cars, such as the Fiat 500e, the Citroen Ami, and the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. These cars are similar to the Spring in terms of size, range, and price, but they have different strengths and weaknesses. Here is a comparison table that shows how they stack up against the Spring:

Model Price Range Power Top Speed Cargo Volume
Dacia Spring $14,900 140 miles 65 hp 78 mph 10.6 cubic feet
Fiat 500e $14,000 115 miles 95 hp 93 mph 7.1 cubic feet
Citroen Ami $7,000 47 miles 8 hp 28 mph 5.3 cubic feet
Wuling Hongguang Mini EV $4,500 106 miles 27 hp 62 mph 9.2 cubic feet

The new Spring is not a car for everyone. It is not a car for those who want a lot of space, power, or range. It is not a car for those who want a lot of technology, luxury, or style. It is not a car for those who want to make a statement.

But it is a car for those who want a cheap and cheerful electric car for the masses. It is a car for those who want a simple, practical, and reliable way to go from A to B. It is a car for those who want to save money and the planet.
