2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS: The Ultimate Open-Top Driver's Car

2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS

If you're looking for a car that combines the thrill of driving a mid-engined sports car with the joy of feeling the wind in your hair, look no further than the 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS. This car crowns the 718 model line with performance and pleasure that few can match. It's the open-top counterpart to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, which means it shares the same 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine that produces 493 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. It also shares the same six-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and rear-axle steering. B

ut unlike the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, which has a fixed rear wing, the 718 Spyder RS has a retractable rear spoiler that deploys automatically at high speeds. It also has a lightweight fabric roof that can be opened and closed manually in seconds.

What Makes the 718 Spyder RS Special?

The 718 Spyder RS is more than just a regular 718 Spyder with more power. It's a car that has been honed and refined by Porsche's motorsport division to deliver the ultimate driving experience. Here are some of the features that make it stand out:

  • Aerodynamics: The 718 Spyder RS has a more aggressive front fascia with larger air intakes and a lower splitter. It also has side air intakes behind the doors that feed air to the engine and improve cooling. The rear diffuser and spoiler work together to generate downforce and stability at high speeds. The car also has a NACA duct on the hood that reduces drag and directs air to the brakes.
  • Suspension: The 718 Spyder RS has a Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system that lowers the ride height by 30 mm compared to the standard 718 Spyder. It also has stiffer springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars that improve handling and responsiveness. The car also has a Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) system with a mechanical rear differential lock that enhances traction and cornering performance.
  • Brakes: The 718 Spyder RS has a Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system that offers superior stopping power and resistance to fade. The brake discs are made of carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic and measure 410 mm in diameter at the front and 390 mm at the rear. The brake calipers are painted yellow and feature six pistons at the front and four at the rear.
  • Wheels and Tires: The 718 Spyder RS rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels that are exclusive to this model. They have wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires that offer exceptional grip and feedback. The tire sizes are 245/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/30 ZR20 at the rear.
  • Weight: The 718 Spyder RS weighs only 3,153 pounds, which makes it one of the lightest cars in its class. Porsche has used various weight-saving measures to achieve this, such as using carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the front hood, rear decklid, front fenders, and doors. The car also has a titanium exhaust system, a lightweight battery, and reduced sound insulation.

How Does It Drive?

The Porsche 718 Spyder RS is a car that rewards skilled drivers with an exhilarating and engaging driving experience. The engine is a masterpiece of engineering that delivers smooth and linear power delivery across the rev range. It also sounds fantastic, especially when you rev it up to its 9,000 rpm redline. The manual transmission is a joy to use, with short, precise shifts and a satisfying clutch feel. The chassis is well-balanced and agile, with sharp steering and minimal body roll. Thanks to its aerodynamic features, the car feels planted and stable at high speeds. The brakes are powerful and responsive, with excellent modulation and feedback.

2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS

The Porsche 718 Spyder RS is not a car for casual drivers or comfort seekers. It's a car for enthusiasts who appreciate pure driving pleasure and don't mind sacrificing some practicality and refinement for it. The ride is firm and bumpy on rough roads, the cabin is noisy and spartan, and the roof is not very convenient or weatherproof. But none of that matters when you're behind the wheel of this car because it makes you feel alive and connected to the road like few other cars can.

How Much Does It Cost?

The 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS is not cheap but worth every penny if you're looking for a car that delivers unparalleled driving pleasure. The base price is $131,400, which is $31,500 more than the standard Porsche 718 Spyder and $11,500 more than the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS. However, as with any Porsche, plenty of options and packages can increase the price significantly. Some of the notable ones include:

  • Weissach Package: This package reduces the weight of the car by another 40 pounds by using more carbon fiber components for the roof frame, rear wing supports, shift knob, steering wheel trim, mirror caps, door sill guards, instrument cluster surround, center console lid, headrest logos, etc. It also adds titanium bolts for the wheels. The package costs $18,000.
  • Clubsport Package: This package adds more safety features for track use, such as a steel roll cage behind the seats, six-point racing harnesses for both driver and passenger, a fire extinguisher with a mounting bracket, etc. The package costs $5,900.
  • Chrono Package: This package adds a stopwatch on top of the dashboard that can measure lap times and other performance data. It also adds an analog clock on top of the instrument cluster and a digital display on the central screen that shows various driving modes and settings. The package costs $1,320.
  • Leather/Alcantara Interior Package: This package adds more leather and Alcantara upholstery for various parts of the cabin, such as the seats, door panels, armrests, steering wheel rim, etc. It also adds contrast stitching in various colors. The package costs $3,790.

The total price of a fully loaded 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS can easily exceed $160k.

Is It Worth It?

The answer to this question depends on what you're looking for in a car. If you're looking for a practical or comfortable car that you can use every day or take on long trips with your family or friends, then no, it's not worth it. Many other cars can offer you more space, comfort, convenience, technology features, etc.

But if you're looking for a car that can offer you an unparalleled driving experience that will make your heart race and your senses tingle every time you get behind the wheel if you're looking for a car that can make you feel like you're driving a race car on public roads; if you're looking for a car that can make you smile every time you hear its engine roar or feel its chassis respond; then yes,it's absolutely worth it.

Porsche 718 Spyder RS

The 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS is one of those rare cars that can make you fall in love with driving all over again.

It's one of those cars that can make you forget about everything else in life except for the road ahead.

It's one of those cars that can make you happy.
