World debut of Porsche 911 GT3 R

Porsche 911 GT3 R

Porsche’s latest entry into international GT3 racing, the 2010 911 GT3 R, replaces the outgoing GT3 Cup S and brings a broader set of tools for customer teams. Developed at the Weissach Motorsport Centre, the car is designed to run in FIA GT3-regulated series and arrives ready-to-race with features aimed at delivering faster lap times and better drivability.

Engine and Powertrain: Bigger Displacement, Broader Capability

The 911 GT3 R builds off the 3.8-liter 911 GT3 Cup car, but it expands output with a 4.0-liter flat-six producing 480 bhp (353 kW). That’s a 30 bhp increase over the Cup car, paired with a six-speed sequential dog-type transmission driving the rear axle. Weight is kept low at just 1,200 kg (2,646 lb).

Powertrain Overview:

  • Engine: 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six
  • Output: 480 bhp (353 kW)
  • Transmission: 6-speed sequential dog box
  • Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
  • Vehicle weight: 2,646 lb (1,200 kg)

Race-Focused Electronics for Easier Driving

The 911 GT3 R adds key driver aids to improve performance and reduce adaptation time:

  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Traction control
  • Electronic throttle with auto blip on downshifts

These systems make the GT3 R more approachable for amateur drivers while still offering the feedback experienced racers need. Porsche’s goal was predictable performance and consistent handling.

Aerodynamics and Chassis Adjustability

Visually, the GT3 R retains its wide stance with flared wheel arches front and rear. The underbody is fully covered for airflow management, and the rear diffuser improves downforce stability. The rear wing offers a broader adjustment range compared to the Cup S, aiding in track-specific setup.

Suspension Technology:

  • Front: Height-adjustable MacPherson struts, SACHS two-way dampers, dual coil springs
  • Rear: Multi-arm axle with height adjustment, fixed subframe, SACHS two-way dampers

The car’s wide-track suspension is built for precision tuning. This allows teams to adapt rapidly to surface and grip changes during race weekends.

Strong Market Demand and Global Rollout

Porsche Motorsport’s Uwe Brettel reported near-total sell-out for the GT3 R’s 2010 production run. Deliveries begin in spring 2010, with the car priced at €279,000 before taxes. At the late 2009 exchange rate, that’s approximately $415,000 USD.

Racing Pedigree: Backed by Proven Success

The 911 GT3 R continues Porsche’s successful customer racing legacy. In 2009, the flagship 911 GT3 RSR won GT2 titles in:

  • FIA GT Championship
  • American Le Mans Series
  • European Le Mans Series
  • 24 Hours Nürburgring

The GT3 R joins this family with a ready-to-run package designed for consistency and endurance.

Racing Driver Development Programme at Silverstone

Porsche also launched a new Racing Driver Development Programme at its Silverstone Experience Centre. The curriculum offers structured coaching across core areas:

  • Driving technique and racecraft
  • Physical and mental conditioning
  • Data analysis and engineering feedback
  • Sponsorship, branding, and career management

Led by Richard Bott and veteran racer Ian Flux, the programme features expert contributions from Mark Webber, Michelin, Adidas, and Porsche Human Performance staff.

Data-Driven Driver Coaching

Each participant gets access to:

  • Circuit-based coaching sessions
  • Video and telemetry-based feedback
  • Personalized training plans

This is aimed at young drivers and club racers preparing to compete in series like the Carrera Cup or GT3 Challenge.

Scholarship Winners: Euan Hankey and Michael Meadows

Two emerging British drivers, Euan Hankey and Michael Meadows, secured £50,000 scholarships for the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season. Both were selected from six finalists following evaluations at Silverstone. Each will receive mentoring from Richard Westbrook, FIA GT2 champion and former Supercup winner.

Porsche Carrera Cup GB 2010: Fastest Single-Make Racing in the UK

The Carrera Cup GB enters its eighth season with 20 races alongside the BTCC calendar. All competitors use 420 bhp 911 GT3 Cup cars with minimal modification, putting driver skill at the center.

Championship Highlights:

  • £150,000 prize pool
  • Winner receives a 911 Carrera on a 12-month loan
  • Triple-tier structure: Pro, Pro-Am1, Pro-Am2

Race tracks include:

  • Silverstone
  • Donington Park
  • Brands Hatch
  • Thruxton
  • Knockhill
  • Oulton Park
  • Croft
  • Snetterton

Over 300,000 fans are expected in 2010, with expanded TV coverage pending.

GT3 Cup Challenge: New Feeder Series in the UK

Also launching in 2010 is the GT3 Cup Challenge, a new championship for 2008-and-older GT3 Cup cars. Run by Porsche Club GB with Porsche’s backing, the series supports grassroots racers. It sits below the Carrera Cup GB and links with Porsche’s global GT3 Cup Challenge network, which includes:

  • USA
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • Japan
  • Scandinavia
  • Turkey
  • Middle East

Summary: Track-Ready Cars and Driver Development, Porsche Style

From the 911 GT3 R’s global debut to the launch of the Racing Driver Development Programme, Porsche’s 2010 motorsport strategy is clear: supply competitive hardware, support privateer success, and grow the next generation of racing talent.
