The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is a vehicle that many fans of the iconic SUV have eagerly awaited. The new model, which will debut in the US market in August 2023, promises to deliver a more affordable, efficient, and capable off-road experience than its predecessor while also honoring the heritage and legacy of the Land Cruiser nameplate.
The Land Cruiser has been around since 1951 when it was first developed as a military vehicle for the Japanese army. Since then, it has evolved into a global phenomenon, conquering harsh terrains and extreme climates in over 170 countries and regions. The Toyota Land Cruiser has also earned a reputation for being reliable, durable, and versatile, making it a favorite among adventurers, explorers, and humanitarian workers.
However, in recent years, the Land Cruiser has also become more luxurious, expensive, and heavy, losing some of its original appeal and accessibility. The last generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser, which was discontinued in 2021, had a starting price of $87,030 and weighed over 5,800 pounds. It also had a thirsty 5.7-liter V8 engine that delivered only 13 mpg in combined driving.
That's why Toyota decided to take a different approach with the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser. Instead of continuing the trend of increasing size, power, and price, Toyota opted to make the new model smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the previous one. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser also features a new hybrid powertrain that improves fuel efficiency and performance. And most importantly, it retains the core values of off-road capability and durability that have defined the Land Cruiser for seven decades.
A New Platform and Powertrain
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is based on the new TNGA-F platform, which is shared with other Toyota and Lexus models such as the Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, LX600, and GX550. The platform uses high-strength steel and aluminum to reduce weight and increase rigidity. It also incorporates advanced technologies such as adaptive variable suspension (AVS), electronic kinetic dynamic suspension system (E-KDSS), multi-terrain select (MTS), crawl control (CRAWL), and multi-terrain monitor (MTM) to enhance off-road performance and comfort.
The most significant change in the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is the introduction of a hybrid powertrain. The new model is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that works in tandem with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. The hybrid system produces a combined output of 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, which is comparable to the previous V8 engine. However, the hybrid system also improves fuel economy by up to 30 percent, achieving an estimated 17 mpg in combined driving.
The hybrid powertrain is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth and responsive shifts. The transmission also features a low-range mode that allows for better control and traction on steep slopes and rough surfaces. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser also comes standard with full-time four-wheel drive with locking center and rear differentials. Additionally, customers can opt for an off-road package that adds a disconnecting front anti-roll bar and 33-inch tires for improved articulation and ground clearance.
A Retro-Inspired Design
The new Toyota Land Cruiser pays homage to its history with a design that draws inspiration from the original FJ40 model that debuted in 1960. The new model features a boxy shape with round headlights, a horizontal grille, a clamshell hood, a split tailgate, and a spare tire mounted on the rear door. The new model also offers three trim levels: the base Land Cruiser 1958 (named after the first year of US sales), the mid-level Land Cruiser, and the limited-edition First Edition.
The base Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 comes with steel wheels, vinyl seats, manual windows, and a basic infotainment system with an AM/FM radio and Bluetooth connectivity. It also has no air conditioning or power steering, making it the most authentic and affordable version of the new model. The mid-level Land Cruiser adds alloy wheels, cloth seats, power windows, air conditioning, power steering, and an upgraded infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen display and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. It also has more safety features such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.
The First Edition is the most luxurious and exclusive version of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser. It comes with leather seats, wood trim, a power sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless charging pad, a premium JBL sound system, a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, navigation, and a 360-degree camera. It also has unique exterior details, such as a heritage-inspired grille, LED headlights, fog lights, roof rails, and a special badge. The First Edition is limited to 5,000 units and will be available in three colors: white, black, and beige.
A Return to the Roots of Off-Road Adventure
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is a vehicle that aims to recapture the essence of what made the Land Cruiser a legend in the first place. It is a vehicle that balances performance, efficiency, capability, durability, and affordability. It is a vehicle that respects its past but also embraces its future. It is a vehicle ready for any adventure, whether on the road or off the beaten path.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will go on sale in the US market in August 2023, with a starting price in the mid-$50,000 range. It will compete with other off-road-oriented SUVs such as the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Land Rover Defender. However, none of these rivals can match the history and heritage of the Land Cruiser, which has been a symbol of off-road adventure for over 70 years.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is more than just a vehicle. It is a statement of passion and dedication to the spirit of exploration and discovery. It is a vehicle that invites you to experience the world in a new way. It is a vehicle that says: let's go places.
