The Toyota Tacoma is one of the most popular and versatile pickup trucks in the market, with a loyal fan base and a reputation for reliability and off-road capability. The all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma will make its big screen debut in the upcoming DC superhero film "Blue Beetle" alongside the titular character played by Xolo Maridueña.
The Tacoma and the Scarab
The film, which is set to be released in August 2023, tells the story of Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who returns to his hometown of Palmera City only to find himself in possession of an ancient alien artifact called the Scarab. The Scarab fuses with Jaime and gives him a powerful suit of armor that transforms him into the superhero Blue Beetle.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma plays a key role in the film, as it is the vehicle that Jaime uses to transport the Scarab before it bonds with him. The Tacoma that appears in the film is a TRD Off-Road Double Cab model painted in Army Green. It features a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. It also comes equipped with an electronic locking rear differential, crawl control, multi-terrain select, hill-start assist control, and a composite bed with a 120-volt power outlet.
The film's director, Ángel Manuel Soto, said that he chose the Tacoma for its ruggedness and versatility. "The Tacoma is a perfect fit for Blue Beetle because it reflects his personality and his journey. It's a truck that can handle any challenge, whether it's on the road or off the road, and it's also a truck that can adapt to different situations and environments. It's a truck that has character and soul," he said.
The Taco Truck and the Classic Tacoma
The Tacoma is not the only Toyota truck that appears in the film. Another important vehicle is a classic Taco Truck, which belongs to Jaime's family. The Taco Truck is a 1995 Toyota Tacoma Xtra Cab model, painted in white and red. It features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 142 horsepower and 160 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed manual transmission.
The Taco Truck is a symbol of Jaime's heritage and culture, as well as his family's business. It also serves as a mobile headquarters for Jaime and his friends, who use it to monitor the Scarab's activity and communicate with other superheroes. The Taco Truck has been modified with various gadgets and equipment, such as a satellite dish, a computer screen, a scanner, and a hidden compartment for storing the Scarab.
The film's producer, John Rickard, said that he wanted to pay homage to the original Tacoma, which debuted in 1995 as a replacement for the Toyota Pickup. "The Taco Truck is a nod to the history and legacy of the Tacoma, which has been one of the most successful and beloved trucks in America for over 25 years. It's also a way of showing how the Tacoma has evolved over time, from its humble beginnings to its modern incarnation," he said.
The Tacoma and the Fans
The appearance of the Tacoma in "Blue Beetle" is expected to generate excitement among fans of both the truck and the comic book character. Toyota has launched a promotional campaign for the film, which includes a website where fans can learn more about the Tacoma's features and capabilities, watch behind-the-scenes videos and interviews with the cast and crew, and enter sweepstakes for a chance to win prizes such as movie tickets, merchandise, and even a 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab model.
Toyota has also partnered with DC Comics to create a limited-edition comic book series called "Blue Beetle: The Road to Palmera City," which follows Jaime's journey from Gotham City to his hometown in his new Tacoma. The comic book series will be available online and at select comic book stores starting in July 2023.
