The Volvo Cars lineup is developing to include the best of the manufacturer's technology on its micro-hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars. And no model is immune. The Swedish luxury car manufacturer is continuing its goal of lowering consumption and CO 2 emissions from its models' exhaust with new micro-hybrid variants, development of the gearbox, and a new generation of plug-in hybrid engines.
Volvo Cars keeps its journey toward complete electrification of its lineup with these new advancements. The Swedish luxury manufacturer assists its customers in their transition to electric mobility, intending to reach half of its sales with 100% electric vehicles and the other half with hybrid vehicles by 2025 before becoming a 100% electric car manufacturer by 2030.
The Volvo XC40:
The Volvo XC40 small SUV ditches its T3 3-cylinder petrol engine in favor of a 163 hp supercharged and turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder B3 (petrol) micro-hybrid engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT). This new engine-gearbox arrangement allows the Volvo XC40 to achieve optimum performance while lowering CO 2 emissions to 153-160 g/km and fuel consumption to 6.7-7 l/100 km (WLTP projected figures). The Volvo XC40 B3 7DCTstarts at 37,000 euros.
The B4 variants of the XC40 that we are already familiar with benefit from the move to a 7DCT gearbox. The XC40 B4 Petrol Traction currently achieves 6.7-7 l/100 km (estimated consumption in the combined WLTP cycle) and CO 2 emissions of between 153 and 160 g/km (WLTP combined cycle projected figures). These figures are listed for the four-wheel-drive variant as 7.1-7.4 l/100 km and 161-168 g/km, respectively. This technological modification has no effect on the model's pricing.
The Volvo S60:
The Volvo S60 sedan's engine lineup extends further in France, where the car was previously only available in plug-in hybrid variants. In addition, there are now gasoline micro-hybrid variations of the Swedish sedan.
The Volvo S60 now starts at 44,000 euros with a 163 hp B3 petrol engine and Geartronic 8 with the Momentum Business finish (front and rear parking radars, rearview camera, Keyless Entry keyless door opening system, leather interior, and Apple Car Play and Android Auto connection).
The Volvo S60 in this updated variant uses 6.7-6.9 l/100 km (WLTP combined cycle rating) with CO 2 emissions of 151-156 g/km (WLTP combined cycle).
The Volvo S60 is also available with a more powerful engine, the B4 petrol 197 hp Geartronic 8 engine in the sporty and dynamic R-Design trim, starting at 48,000 euros.
The Volvo V60:
The Volvo V60 B3 petrol station wagon features a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT 7), which reduces CO 2 emissions to 140-148 g/km (WLTP combined cycle projected values). This new engine configuration - B3 Petrol DCT 7 gearbox - is priced starting at 41,000 euros.
Volvo Cars showcases a new generation of plug-in hybrid engines that are more cost-effective and more reliable.
The new generation plug-in hybrid engines in the 60 and 90 ranges (Recharge T6 AWD, Recharge T8 AWD, and T8 AWD Polestar Engineered) will combine a new electric motor of 107 kW or 145 hp (up from 65 kW / 87 hp before) with a new "High autonomy" battery of 18.8 kWh (compared to 11.6 kWh for the previous generation). As a result, these plug-in hybrid vehicles have a higher level of autonomy, are among the finest in their respective categories, have lower CO 2 emissions, and provide more power.
Indeed, these new technical facts should allow for the WLTP combined cycle to traverse distances of about 70 to 90 km on 100 % electric power while reducing CO 2 emissions by approximately half.
