New Citroën C5 Aircross 2026: Electric SUV With Up to 680 km Range

Citroën’s Electrification Strategy

The new Citroën C5 Aircross SUV has joined the shortlist of seven finalists for the 2026 Car of the Year award. From fifty contenders to just seven, this recognition places the C5 Aircross in elite company among Europe’s top automotive innovations.

The announcement comes as Citroën accelerates its electrification roadmap. Positioned as the brand’s most advanced SUV, the new C5 Aircross combines practicality, comfort, and electric mobility — a formula that appears to resonate with both jurors and consumers.

A Jury Focused on Innovation and Accessibility

Sixty automotive journalists from 23 European countries will determine the winner, to be revealed on January 9, 2026, during the Brussels International Motor Show. Each juror will allocate 25 points, awarding up to 10 to any single vehicle. Before voting, all seven finalists will undergo an intensive joint test session at Parc Motor Castellolí in Spain.

To qualify for consideration, vehicles must be available in at least five European markets before the end of the year — a threshold Citroën met with the Italian launch of the C5 Aircross Hybrid 145, priced at approximately $31,000 USD.

Design: Familiar Comfort, Sharper Character

The new Citroën C5 Aircross builds on a proven foundation, refining its design for a more aerodynamic and modern look. The front fascia adopts sharper LED headlights and a bold grille that better integrates Citroën’s signature logo. Subtle chrome accents and refined panel contours provide a balanced mix of function and style.

Inside, Citroën continues its legacy of comfort leadership. The cabin introduces upgraded Advanced Comfort seats, reduced noise levels, and improved ergonomics. The modular rear seats slide, recline, and fold independently, maximizing cargo flexibility. The trunk offers generous space, ideal for family use or long-distance travel.

Powertrains: Full Electrification Meets Flexibility

For the first time, the C5 Aircross family spans electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild-hybrid options, reflecting Citroën’s multi-energy approach to customer needs.

Electric Versions

  • ë-C5 Aircross Comfort Range
    • Motor: 210 hp (157 kW)
    • Battery: 73 kWh
    • Range: 520 km (323 miles)
    • Focus: Affordability and daily practicality
  • ë-C5 Aircross Long Range
    • Motor: 230 hp (170 kW)
    • Battery: 97 kWh
    • Range: 680 km (423 miles)
    • Focus: Extended highway performance

Both versions support fast charging, offering 20% to 80% recharge in under 30 minutes with compatible DC chargers.

Hybrid Options

  • Hybrid 145 Automatic
    • Powertrain: 1.2-liter turbocharged engine with 48V hybrid system
    • Combined output: 145 hp
    • Transmission: 8-speed automatic
    • Price: ≈ $31,000 USD
  • Plug-in Hybrid 195 Automatic

    • Positioned as a gateway to full EV adoption

These variants give customers gradual access to electrification, allowing adaptation without range anxiety.

Comfort as a Competitive Advantage

Citroën continues to differentiate through its focus on ride comfort. The Advanced Comfort suspension system — a hallmark of the brand — uses hydraulic progressive dampers to smooth road imperfections without compromising control. Paired with sound insulation improvements, the result is one of the quietest cabins in its class.

For long commutes and cross-country trips, Citroën aims to deliver stress-free driving through ergonomic seating and adaptive suspension. Few competitors in the C-SUV segment prioritize comfort with such consistency.

Technology and Safety Integration

The C5 Aircross introduces a suite of modern driver-assistance systems, including:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • 360° Surround View Cameras
  • Traffic Sign Recognition

Inside, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster pairs with a 10-inch central touchscreen, featuring an intuitive infotainment interface compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Over-the-air updates keep software current without dealer visits.

Voice control and customizable widgets simplify in-car operation, reducing driver distraction.

Market Position: Competitive in Price, Strong in Identity

Within the C-SUV segment, Citroën’s pricing and feature strategy give it a clear competitive edge. The segment is the third largest in Italy by volume, and one of Citroën’s most strategic battlegrounds. Competing models include the Hyundai Tucson, Peugeot 3008, and Volkswagen Tiguan — yet the C5 Aircross stands out for comfort, space, and EV accessibility.

The brand’s decision to offer a full electrified lineup — from the urban Ami quadricycle to the C4, C4X, and now the C5 Aircross — underscores a systematic approach to electrification rather than a single flagship experiment.

Historical Context: Citroën’s Legacy in Car of the Year

The 2026 shortlist marks another milestone in Citroën’s long association with innovation. The C5 Aircross follows the C3/ë-C3, which reached the podium in 2025, and the C4, a 2021 finalist. Previous Citroën models — the GS (1971), CX (1975), and XM (1990) — all won the Car of the Year title, emphasizing how comfort and ingenuity remain part of the brand’s DNA.

This consistency strengthens Citroën’s identity as a company that builds accessible innovation, not luxury-priced technology.

Upcoming Public Test Events

Ahead of the January 2026 announcement, the C5 Aircross will feature prominently at promotional events across Europe. One example is the Auto magazine showcase in Milan’s CityLife district, running from November 29 to December 8, where visitors will be able to test-drive the finalists and experience Citroën’s comfort philosophy firsthand.

What Sets the C5 Aircross Apart

The C5 Aircross’s entry into the Car of the Year shortlist signals recognition of Citroën’s ability to deliver:

  1. Comfort-first engineering, rooted in suspension innovation.
  2. Electric range leadership, offering up to 680 km on a single charge.
  3. Strategic affordability, targeting a mid-market price band.
  4. Proven safety and connectivity, matching higher-priced rivals.
  5. European availability, fulfilling eligibility and production readiness.

For many consumers, this combination creates a practical argument for adoption of electrified vehicles — without premium price tags.

Outlook: Ready for Europe’s Electric Future

The new Citroën C5 Aircross represents a balanced approach to electrification: advanced, accessible, and adaptable. Citroën aims to strengthen its position in Europe’s fast-growing C-SUV market, while the Car of the Year 2026 nomination amplifies its credibility as a forward-looking manufacturer.

The outcome in January remains uncertain, but Citroën’s finalist position already validates its strategy — build electric vehicles that people can actually afford and enjoy driving.
