4 Tips for Protecting Your Home from Hurricanes

Hurricanes are among the most frightening weather phenomena on earth. These storms unleash devastation on anything in its path, and according to recent studies, hurricanes are only getting stronger. Unfortunately, there’s no preventing these storms, but there are ways to prepare for them. Here are some tips to help keep your home safe during a hurricane.

Clear the Lawn

Even the weakest hurricanes have enough strength to pick up unsecured grills, decorations and lawn furniture. These items could be carried far from your home or destroyed entirely, but even more concerning is that they can be turned into dangerous projectiles that could cause significant damage or injury. Heavy objects should be secured to the ground, and anything light or movable should be carried indoors.

Guard the Garage

Garage doors are weak compared to the walls of a home, so give it the protection it needs by reinforcing it with a vertical brace and horizontal beams. This will keep your lawn equipment safe and protect your car from requiring auto glass replacement East Baton Rouge Parish LA or in your area.

Ready the Roof

Roof damage is among the most expensive repairs associated with hurricanes. Even category 1 hurricanes, with wind speeds between 74 and 95 mph, can cause extensive destruction. In advance of storm season, make sure the roof is in good shape and that no shingles are damaged or missing. Sealing the roof deck with waterproof tape adds another layer of protection, and it also is advised to have straps installed that secure the roof to the walls.

Inventory Your Items

Even a well-protected home can experience damage, so keep an updated list of your possessions. Be as specific as possible and include values. This will be helpful should you need to file an insurance claim, and it will make much easier keeping track of what items need to be replaced.

Nothing can prepare a person for experiencing his or her first hurricane, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take steps to prepare your home. These tips will help guide you through the process.
